Allen Ginsberg - Howl

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed bymadness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in themachinery of night, who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and highsat up smoking in the supernatural darkness ofcold-water flats floating across the tops of citiescontemplating jazz, who bared their brains to Heaven under the El andsaw Mohammedan angels staggering on tene-ment roofs illuminated, who passed through universities with radiant cooleyes hallucinating Arkansas and Blake-light tragedyamong the scholars of war,who were expelled from the academies for crazy &publishing obscene odes on the windows of the skull, who cowered in unshaven rooms in underwear, burn-ing their money in wastebaskets and listeningto the Terror through the wall, who got busted in their pubic beards returning throughLaredo with a belt of marijuana for New...

the god of inane things

today, my little prayers involve all things of consequence and just plain rubbish.1. not get called today for Obligations and Contracts. as usual, I haven't lifted a finger the whole weekend and my stack of cases have become as good as fodder for termites.2. not get into traffic on my way to Rockwell. the driver's off to my mum's office and I've to take public transpo while lugging 40 lbs worth of fresh laundry and groceries (pantry-raiders, unite!)3. not get lost on my way to Tiendesitas tonight for the Ship for South East Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP) party. we have two girls staying in our home -- Archna, a People's Association Leader from Singapore, and Malathi, a Community Leader from Malaysia. both are of Indian descent but migrated to their present home countries. last night, we went shopping with them while discussing Bollywood, etc.4. not spend too much on pizza and pasta this week. last week, my allowance was frittered away via Pazzo (Powerplant Mall), Amici di Don Bosco (Paso...

BETROTHED IN THE NEW MILLENIUM

BETROTHED IN THE NEW MILLENIUM by Chiquit Torrente Read: Genesis 24: 1-9, 62-67   Apparently
arranged marriages still exist today. The daughter of my mom’s best
friend [Note: Vida's Sister, Santanina] was being pestered…er, courted by a Muslim guy. He wouldn’t take
no for an answer. So she said her mother had betrothed her to someone
else. He backed off.   In
some parts of the world arranged marriages are still the norm. My mom’s
best friend [my mom, Fatima], who is half-Muslim by blood, says that in the Muslim
culture arranged marriages have happier endings, because when parents
choose their offspring’s life partner, the whole family—both sides of
in-laws—is committed to making the marriage work.   In
many ways Isaac and Rebekah’s marriage had been arranged. Abraham set
the requirements; his servant went out to find the girl without Isaac’s
input. God sent the right girl, identified her for Abraham’s servant,
and moved her family to give their conse...

ASIAN EDITION

A Conference on Media Piracy and Intellectual Property in South East
Asia Sponsored by the Goethe Institute, Manila, and the UP Film Institute

Date: November 24, 2006, 9:00 am 5:00 pm, UP Film Institute,
University of the Philippines, Diliman, Metro Manila, CMC Auditorium

Many Filipinos still remember the "Asian Edition" - a scheme during the Marcos years, when American textbooks were reprinted locally and without paying royalties to the original publishers. Now, "Asian Edition" serves as title for a conference that will look at the phenomenon of media piracy in South East Asia today. Music, movie and software piracy is one of the most prominent media issues of the digital millennium. In the Philippines it has started a whole underground economy and currently seems to change the way movies and
other media products are distributed and consumed products here and in other South East Asian countries.

The goal of the workshop is to contribute to an informed di...
